IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN – BACK TO SCHOOL!
Every year, this time comes by so quickly. I mean really, where did summer go? This is an exciting time of year for everyone. Maybe you’re a parent sending your children off to school for the first time, a first-year college student, or maybe you’re going back to school after a 10-year hiatus. Wherever you are in your educational journey, I am encouraging you to keep going! As many of you may know, I am originally from Jordan and education brought me to the States. It was in 1989 where I started my student career in the United States at Southern Illinois University. This opportunity is what motivates me to support others in their professional endeavors. I have always been a life-long learner and higher-education is very important to me in supporting the cultivation of the next generation of working professionals.
Higher education is a vital resource for developing new skills, relationships, and interests. Most importantly, it helps prepare students for a successful lifelong career that they are passionate about. During times of change, in their professional careers and in relation to the new trends that the pandemic has brought, students can lean on the diverse skill set they developed throughout their education to adapt and persevere.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to better themselves personally and professionally regardless of external circumstances such as affordability. For these reasons, I have started a scholarship program to assist those who are in need of financial assistance. As the founder of Sam Mustafa Charleston Scholarship Program, I am committed to ensuring that students are provided with the financial assistance they need to attend college.
WHAT BETTER WAY TO LEARN THAN THROUGH BOOKS?
Everyday, I carve 1-hour out of my day to expand my knowledge and linguistic skills through reading. Arabic is my native language and what allowed me to learn English so quickly was practicing this skillset everyday through reading exercises. The act of reading allows me to relax, meditate and better myself.
Here are some professional development books that I recommend. They have helped me tremendously in both my leadership as a CEO and my early career as a student.
1) The 10x Rule by Grant Cardone:
Grant Cardone is an inspiration to me and someone who I even had the opportunity to meet. It’s emphasis is on putting in 10 times the effort of one activity. While others do things once, think they aren’t good at something and quit, and what they neglect to understand is that no one starts doing something exceptionally immediately. It takes time and it takes effort. A lot of effort, at that. Realizing this notion changed my entire perspective as an early CEO and a concept that I instill within my executives.
2) 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:
A timeless read. Warning this book is controversial and will make you come to realize things in yourself, maybe you weren’t ready to analyze. It dives into your daily habits and how to obtain desirable results by taking action and initiative.
3) How to Win Friends and Influence People:
Another classic. This is one book I recommend to everyone at all levels and frequently refer to. This book is for anyone who is looking to enhance their people skills. It is also a great book to read if you are in the salesforce, as much negotiation has to do with understanding the other party.
